Mark has a niece and nephew who are more like siblings to us (they were married the same month we were and had kids before us) and his niece's little girl who was 18 months old recently drowned in a canal during a family reunion. She was at Primary Children's Hospital for a week before she passed away. It has been a roller coaster of emotions for the family with her progressing and then failing, but there also have been many miracles and testimony building experiences that I think will help Ashley and Pat (the parents) find closure and peace. If you are interested in more of the story, you can visit their blog http://patrickandashley.blogspot.com/ but be prepared to have your testimony grow a little, and then cry a little, and then hold your loved ones a little closer.
It has been hard to watch family go through such a trial, and especially one that hits so close to home now that we have a little girl of our own and it's easy to put ourselves in their position. But through this experience, my testimony has strengthened in knowing God has a plan for each one of us, there is life after death, and that families can be together forever. That doesn't mean it's not hard here on earth to lose a loved one though. We continue to pray for Ashley and Pat as they adjust to life after losing sweet Preslee Jo. We miss you Preslee.
